GreenHouse17 Domestic Violence Shelter

Prior to starting Mountain Bird Designs, I worked for 25 years as an epidemiologist in the field of domestic violence prevention at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. I remain committed to supporting domestic violence survivors. MBD donates to GreenHouse17, an innovative and sustainable domestic violence shelter providing shelter for survivors in 17 counties in Kentucky. The shelter is located on a beautiful 40-acre farm that surrounds our emergency shelter. The farm grows flowers, fruits, vegetables and herbs. Adults living in the shelter have the participate on the farm should they choose, in exchange for a small stipend. You can learn more about this amazing shelter here.

MANNA Food Bank

Mountain Bird Designs also supports families facing hunger. After moving to North Carolina we learned that Western North Carolina has an extremely high poverty rate. This leads to many families struggling with not having enough food. In fact, 1 of every 4 children faces hunger in Western North Carolina. North Carolina is in critical need of food support. MANNA links the food industry with over 200 partner agencies in 16 counties of WNC.
MANNA Food Bank is an extraordinary member of Feeding America.

In 2015, MANNA distributed 15.7 million pounds of food in 16 counties of Western North Carolina. MANNA Food Bank distributes fresh produce, bread, meat, and numerous other sources of food. To be able to distribute the much needed food, MANNA relies on volunteers and financial support. In addition to providing financial support, I volunteer every week to do what I can to address the widespread hunger that families in my community face. Our ultimate goal is to reach the number of sales that will allow us to donate 10% of our profit to GreenHouse17 and Manna FoodBank. In 2016, because of our customers, Mountain Bird Designs contributed $137.00 to support domestic violence survivors and $113.20 to families facing hunger. These contributions contributed to the support of 12 domestic violence survivors at GreenHouse17. And provided 4,627 children in 149 schools in Western North Carolina with Manna Packs for Kids, ensuring that every child leaves with enough meals and snacks to get them through the weekend.
